Procedure:

Glycine (1 g, 13.3 mmol, 1 equiv.) was dissolved in dioxane (10 mL), water (5 mL), 1M NaOH (2 mL). The reaction mixture was cooled to 0 ˚C in an ice-bath. Boc anhydride (3.2 g, 14.6 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture stirred at 0 ˚C for 5 minutes and then removed from the ice bath and allowed to reach room temperature.
