Synthesis of pyrrole sulfonate for use in sulfonamide formation.

Reaction start time: 3:00 PM EST, 5/2/13

AEW 1-1 (2.0 g, 10 mmol, 1 equiv.) and Sulfur trioxide pyridine (1.71 g, 10 mmol, 1 equiv.) were refluxed in toluene (20 mL) overnight. Reaction was concentrated under reduced atmosphere and then extracted with DCM (3 × 10 mL) and water (10 mL). The aqueous phase was concentrated to give a dark brown red solid (140 mg).
